Quilt Artists of Muskoka - 2010-2011

The group gathered in September. We had three "waves" shown. One is the queen in her carriage with the prince in the back window. Her hand actually waves! One is from a Japanese picture of waves from her trip to Japan. One is the Venus of Willendorf swimming with beads added to make the waves frothy and a wavy border treatment. There is a picture of a beginning applique piece where the fabric was folded and dipped into paints to get the colours. The squares and yarns couched are on a sweatshirt that has been taken apart, embellished and sewn back together.

29 postcards were gathered for a display in Huntsville starting October 1 at the Canada Summit Centre. New books were also browsed. The new words are " trees and leaves". Watch the newsletter for our next meeting.

October 2010 meeting:

The quilt aritists had a wonderful meeting in October. Our theme was trees and leaves. This is the most completed pieces we have had. There were many methods used including metals for leaves and tree branches for 3 D purposes. There was one abstract. A member has challenged us to make a bracelet for the quilt boutique. These should be interesting. Click on an image for a larger view.

November 2010 meeting:

Our challenge words were "My Favourite...." There were three presented. My Favourite book (Lord of the Rings), my favourite thing to do on a rainy day (quilt) and my favourite food, candy (inspiration was the shopping bag from Bulk Barn). There will be more finished in January. We tried using watercolour paper and inks. The inks were dropped onto the paper and saran wrap was placed over it and wrinkled up. We hope to have some art cards for the boutique at the quilt show in June. Two bracelets were shown that are a challenge given by one of our members and these will sold in the boutique. January 2011 meeting:

The word for the assignment was scraps. One member had a picture of her scrap pile that she showed us before we saw her piece. There are salvages, a scrap dress and one with batik scraps because that is all she saves. There is a turquoise bracelet and a notecard that will be for sale in the boutique. February 2011 meeting:

The word for the assignment was "abstract". Gillian brought in her 'ladies' for us to see. Click on an image to see a larger version.

April 28, 2011:

We held our meeting at the Bohemian Cafe in Bracebridge. It has a great room with sinks where we were able to paint fabrics after our meeting. One challenge for "growth" was finished and it was shadow quilted. Three vessels were make. This was from instructions from Quilting Arts magazine and sent out every Friday for five weeks. An iris work in progress was shown and the painting technique was explained.
